Nowadays, this breed is often used in military and police work. In the 19th century, this breed was bred for stability and strength. These protective and friendly creatures were both guardians and playing companions for children. Breed fanciers formed the first breed club in 1896 in Germany to pursue the looks and qualities clearly desired in the breed. The AKC recognized this breed in 1904. The modern breed is only slightly different from the original, but the breed standard changed several times since the time of the breed foundation. A medium-sized, shorthair, with tight-fitting coat, this breed is playful and high-spirited. It is even-tempered, which makes it an excellent family pet.
